How does the service work?
Using a generously sized 240 litre wheelie bin, subscribers have their garden waste collected every two weeks. The wheelie bin will be emptied from the edge of your property on collection day.
How much does the service cost?
The Garden Waste Collection Service costs £78 (including VAT) for an annual subscription which is excellent value for money at just £1.50 per week. For most subscribers, this will be cheaper than driving your garden waste to the tip.
Where do you operate?
Greentopia's service is available in Lewes District and the City of Brighton & Hove.
How do I apply?
Simply complete the application form and Direct Debit mandate and return it to us at the address provided. We will process your payment and, once receved, will deliver a wheelie bin, welcome pack and collection calendar to you. Your collections will start shortly after.
What are the environmental benefits of the service?
When biodegradable material, such as garden waste, is buried in landfill it rots with oxygen to produce large amounts of methane, a greenhouse gas more potent than carbon dioxide. This causes serious damage to the environment and contributes to climate change. Garden waste collected by Greentopia is composted locally in Sussex.
What happens to my garden waste after it is collected?
The wheelie bin will be emptied into a refuse truck at the side of the road. From here, it will be taken to a composting facility in Sussex where it decomposes naturally resulting in nutrient rich compost.
What can and cannot be put into the wheelie bin for collection?
We accept - grass cuttings, leaves, garden prunings, hedge trimmings, small twigs/branches or weeds.
We cannot accept - food waste, egg shells, pet bedding, soil, plastic, wood or cardboard. Please ensure you do not place any Japanese Knotweed or weeds controlled by the Weeds Act 1959 (Common Ragwort, Spear Thistle, Creeping/Field Thistle, Broad Leaved Dock and Curled Dock) in the wheelie bin.
Please contact us if you are unsure what can and cannot be placed in the wheelie bin.
What happens if I put the wrong items into the wheelie bin?
Our collection crew will be unable to collect the garden waste. We will leave a tag on the bin requesting the subscriber to remove the contamination and place the bin for collection on the next scheduled collection date.
How much garden waste can I put into the wheelie bin?
Wheelie bins are generously sized at 240 litres and will easily accommodate the garden waste of a typical household. To avoid damage to the refuse truck, overweight bins (ie. difficult for one person to easily move) will not be emptied. The subscriber will be requested to reduce the weight and place the bin for collection on the next scheduled collection date.
We are unable to collect any garden waste left at the side of the wheelie bin and the bin lid must be closed. If you need to subscribe for an additional wheelie bin, please contact us.
What are the dimensions of the wheelie bin?
The wheelie bin's dimensions are as follows:
Height - 106.3cm (about 42 inches)
Width - 72cm (about 28 inches)
Depth - 60cm (about 24 inches)
When will my garden waste be collected?
Garden waste will be collected fortnightly on your allocated collection date, with the exception of the two weeks containing the Christmas and New Year holidays, resulting in twenty five collections per subscription year. You will be notified of your collection date in the welcome pack.
What happens on Bank Holidays?
Greentopia collections are unaffected by Bank Holidays and will take place on your usual collection day (apart from the Christmas and New Year holidays).
Where do I leave the wheelie bin for collection?
Wheelie bins must be placed at the edge of the subscriber's property visible from the road no later than 7.30am (7am in Ditchling, Westmeston and Wivelsfield) on the day of collection.
Can you help me if I'm unable to move the wheelie bin?
An assisted collection service is available for subscribers who are unable to physically move the wheelie bin to the edge of their property. Applications must be made in writing, explaining the reasons for the request.
What happens if the wheelie bin is not emptied on the scheduled collection day?
We make every effort to ensure the wheelie bin is emptied on the scheduled date. However, if your collection has been missed, please notify us on the collection day or following day and we will make a return trip to collect the missed bin within three working days.
What happens if the wheelie bin is damaged or stolen?
If the bin is damaged or destroyed by Greentopia Ltd's collection crew, we will replace the bin at no cost to the subscriber.
If the bin is damaged or destroyed by the subscriber or a third person on their property, we will replace the bin at a cost of £30.
If the bin is stolen, we will replace the bin at no cost to the subscriber upon receipt of proof of the theft being reported to the police.
How do I pay my annual subscription?
The annual subscription is payable in advance by Direct Debit. Please ensure you complete the Direct Debit mandate on the application form.
Banks and Building Societies may not accept Direct Debit instructions for some types of account. Please contact us if this is the case as alternative arrangements may be possible.
Can I share a subscription with a neighbour?
You are welcome to share a subscription between two or more neighbours, although the subscription will be registered to one subscriber, payable by them and the wheelie bin collected from their property.
What happens if I move house?
Subscribers moving house within Greentopia Ltd's collection area may transfer their subscription to their new address upon giving us two weeks notice in writing.
Subscribers moving outside our collection area must inform us in writing and make the wheelie bin available for removal. Alternatively, the subscription may be transferred to the new occupier of the house. Please contact us to arrange this.
